Sharon Marie Smith, PhD, is the vibrant Director of the UWI Business Incubator. She has significant industry as well asconsulting experience with a focus on MSMEs, a proven track record in teaching and research as well as the practice ofmarketing, operational and general management in the global marketplace. In the short time that she has been with the UWI, she has ignited fires in terms of entrepreneurship and commercialization on the campus!
Sharon has a highly evolved sense of social responsibility and justice evidenced by her numerous community andprofessional involvement. Her burning passion is for the causes of women and children worldwide. As past presidentand active life member of the St. Hugh’s Past Students’ Association in Jamaica, she pioneered a self-sustaining SchoolBreakfast Feeding Programme, which has endured for more than twenty years. There was also an innovative activityshe introduced in the 90s, “Rap Sessions” between past and current students which has evolved into Group Mentoring atSt. Hugh’s today.
She also served as President of her Alumnae Association’s South Florida chapter a registered 501(c)(3). In SouthFlorida, she directed activities, managed the budget and negotiated contracts to achieve goals for the more than 150-member organization serving approximately five thousand in their community. There she designed a programme to givesupport (financial, social and even educational) for recent past students on athletic scholarships in the US.
She was recently recognized by Project Harambe and Mughamba Foundation (Chicago based charities) for hercontribution to the women and children with HIV/AIDS in Kenya, based on her innovative microeconomic projectsthat have helped restore dignity to its participants.
Since her return, she has continued her activism on behalf of women and children, focusing on Jamaica and other Caribbean territories.
